Sometimes extractions are necessary because the tooth or teeth are too far gone to effectively restore. There are many reasons for this and usually the gap needs replacing unless they are wisdom teeth or Orthodontic and Bite related extractions.
Sometimes people think extractions are an easy way out of a problematic situation. This is rarely the case, however the problems resulting from extraction are usually slow to become apparent until it is too late or very costly to fix. The trouble people have trying to cope with full dentures, especially the lower full denture, needs to be factored into your decision making.
If you require a tooth removed, you can be assured we will approach the procedure in a professional and caring manner.
Sometimes a tooth cannot be extracted because there is too much infection for anesthetic to work. This may mean a few days or weeks on antibiotics or a general anesthetic in hospital with an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (Oral Surgeon).
There are different types of extractions and these are usually grouped in to level of difficulty, which may include splitting the gum open, removing bone, or drilling to gain access to fragments of split or broken tooth. Unfortunately it can be difficult to determine the type required or the cost, or ongoing cost of an extraction until it is complete or even healed.
We often refer patients who require complex extractions onto a specialist Oral Surgeon.
