A porcelain inlay or onlay may be recommended for a tooth where a simple filling is not appropriate, but a crown is not needed. There are many materials to choose from today other than the traditional gold casting. The Vita II porcelain used in CEREC® and Roland Mill is a popular choice as the properties of this porcelain closely mimic the enamel of the tooth and can be bonded to the tooth effectively.
Common uses for this material and process are for teeth with heavy wear, cracks, or the “grain bread” sensation that occurs when a crack in a tooth goes to the nerve. The best thing about these long lasting restorations is that they are tooth colored and can be completed in one visit.
